Mobile Health and Digital Technologies in Nursing Education and Practice: Advancing Professional Competencies, Clinical Decision-Making, and Patient Safety

The rapid integration of digital technologies and mobile health (mHealth) has fundamentally transformed the landscape of nursing education and professional practice. While smartphones and specialized mobile applications offer students and practitioners unprecedented opportunities for point-of-care data access and enhanced interprofessional collaboration, they also introduce complex challenges regarding patient safety, digital distractions, and the evolving professional competencies required in modern healthcare environments. This Research Topic aims to explore the multifaceted role of digital tools, focusing on how nursing education and professional practice must evolve to prepare both current and future practitioners for a digitally fluent professional life.Suitable themes for manuscripts include, but not limited to: • Clinical Judgment & Risk Management: Evaluating how mobile-based decision support tools enhance nursing accuracy, while addressing risks like digital distractions and cognitive overload.• Ethical Nursing Accountability: Navigating the ethical balance between relying on automated clinical suggestions and maintaining the nurse's professional intuition and responsibility for patient safety.• Interprofessional & Patient Engagement: Investigating how secure mobile platforms improve real-time coordination between nursing teams and other health professionals, as well as the impact of technology on the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship.• Continuity of Care: Utilizing digital tools to streamline nursing handovers, remote patient monitoring, and the delivery of health education in diverse care settings.• E-Professionalism & Responsible Use: Establishing standardized frameworks for "responsible smartphone use" that integrate digital etiquette, ethical boundaries, and strict legal/confidentiality requirements within nursing curricula.• Standardized Digital Literacy: Developing formal competency assessments for nursing students and clinicians to ensure they can critically appraise, navigate, and apply digital tools safely during clinical placements and professional practice. This Research Topic seeks to bridge the gap between rapid technological advancement and the foundational values of the nursing profession. By fostering a deeper understanding of how mobile technology intersects with nursing education, we aim to inspire a new framework for digital professionalism: one that empowers educators to produce professionals who are not only technically proficient but also ethically grounded and clinically astute.
