Modern applications of EEG in neurological and cognitive research - Volume II

This Research Topic is part of the Modern Applications of EEG in Neurological and Cognitive Research series.Electroencephalography (EEG) continues to provide real-time insights into brain functionality by measuring electrical brain activity, making it a cornerstone of modern neurological and cognitive research. As a non-invasive technique with high temporal resolution, EEG enables the investigation of complex neural processes underlying cognition, behavior, and neurological disorders. It has been widely applied in areas such as cognitive workload, epilepsy, sleep research, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and the neural correlates of attention and memory.Building on the foundations established in Volume I, this second volume reflects the ongoing maturation and expanding application of EEG methodologies. Advances in portable and wearable EEG devices, Internet of Things (IoT) integration, and improved signal processing techniques have further extended EEG use in both clinical and real-world environments. In parallel, the integration of EEG with other neuroimaging and physiological modalities, including fMRI and MEG, continues to support more comprehensive models of brain dynamics. This Volume II Research Topic continues to explore how EEG is used to understand brain activity and its impact on behavior and health. EEG remains central to the diagnosis, detection, and monitoring of neurological and cognitive disorders, as well as to research on emotional processing, stress responses, and mental health. The development of EEG-based Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs) continues to advance, enabling direct communication between the brain and external devices, with growing applications in assistive technologies and neurorehabilitation.Volume II also highlights emerging directions in EEG-based neurofeedback, personalized rehabilitation, and longitudinal monitoring of brain function. These approaches show increasing promise in improving cognitive and motor outcomes following neurological injury and in managing conditions such as ADHD and anxiety. In addition, this volume encourages discussion of methodological rigor, reproducibility, and ethical considerations associated with modern EEG research. The scope of this Research Topic includes, but is not limited to:- Use of EEG in diagnosing, detecting, and monitoring neurological and cognitive disorders- EEG applications in emotional processing, stress responses, and mental health research- Development and application of EEG-based Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs)- Advances in neurofeedback and EEG-based rehabilitation approaches- Experimental designs, methodologies, and analytical techniques in EEG studies- Reviews synthesizing recent advances, challenges, and future directions in EEG research- Clinical and research case studies demonstrating applied EEG use- Novel tools, wearable systems, and approaches for EEG data acquisition and analysis- Perspectives on emerging trends and ethical considerations in EEG-based neuroscience Topic editors: YUVARAJ RAJAMANICKAM, Kuldeep Singh, John Thomas Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77413/modern-applications-of-eeg-in-neurological-and-cognitive-research---volume-ii
