Molecular Markers in Plant Genomics and Genotyping

Molecular markers are very important components and powerful tools in plant functional genomics. They can be applied in plant genotyping both for academic study and practical plant breeding. Molecular markers are variable from relatively simple and elementary molecular markers, like microsatellites or SSR (Simple Sequence Repeats), DNA sequencing, PCR and qPCR, allele-specific molecular probes and primers, and advanced microchip-DNA technology involving hundreds and thousands of reactions simultaneously. Plant functional genomics and genotyping are always popular topic since it is an important requirement for plant biology research. In this Research Topic we want to focus on plant study in all areas where molecular makers are used for functional plant genomics and plant genotyping. All aspects of plant analyses are welcome from genetic diversity in natural plant species with unknown genomes to important crops with well-developed functional genomics, including various stresses, plant growth and ontogenesis. The results of molecular marker application in plant genomics and genotyping are important not only in advancing scientific progress, but also in supporting biodiversity and biosecurity of plants from natural ecosystems. Molecular markers can be used for analysis of plant-derived products in food and medicine, but they always important for practical application in crop breeding. Regardless of the technology used, whether traditional or modern, which is constantly developing, all plant biologists must understand and incorporate molecular markers to study plant genomics and genotyping. The goal of this Research Topic is to showcase the current status of our knowledge and progress in molecular markers and their application for functional plant genomics and genotyping using all available methods and technologies, targeting various genes of interest in any plant species grown in various conditions and with various origin. This covers a wide and diverse range of areas, from traditional molecular markers to modern molecular microarray technologies, scientific approaches for functional plant genomics and genotyping, and research ideas; all aimed at achieving a better understanding of and practical application of plant molecular markers. The scope of the Research Topic includes all manuscript types covering the following, but not limited to, areas:• Molecular marker development and use for plant genotyping;• Plant functional genomics and genotyping based on traditional molecular markers and marker-assisted selection;• PCR-based plant genotyping and genomics: theoretical and practical applications;• Allele-specific, non-fluorescent, and FRET-based molecular markers and their application for plant genomics and genotyping;• Microarray technologies for whole-genome analysis in plants;• Plant genomics and genotyping for modern plant biology, ecology, food security, crop breeding, and other applications.
