Molecular Pathogenesis and Targeted Therapies in Oral and Head and Neck Cancers

Oral and head and neck cancers, predominantly arising as squamous cell carcinomas, remain a critical concern in modern oncology due to their tendency for late diagnosis, aggressive behavior, and poor survival outcomes. Focusing on malignancies originating in the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx, recent research has made strides in revealing the genetic and molecular alterations underlying tumor development and progression. However, challenges persist in translating these discoveries into clinical practice, with current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies often failing to significantly improve early detection and patient prognosis. Notwithstanding advances in molecular profiling and precision medicine, there remain gaps in realizing reliable biomarkers and truly personalized interventions for these cancers. This Research Topic aims to drive progress in understanding the molecular pathways and translational aspects of oral and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, with an emphasis on the discovery and clinical application of critical biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The primary objectives are to pinpoint novel molecular drivers, refine non-invasive diagnostic techniques, and explore targeted interventions - especially those with the potential for clinical implementation. Further, we seek to clarify how these mechanisms inform future strategies for earlier detection, better prognostication, and more effective, individualized therapy. The scope will be limited to studies exploring molecular mechanisms, biomarkers, and targeted therapies specifically for squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity, pharynx, or larynx, excluding other head and neck neoplasms or benign conditions. To gather further insights in the molecular and translational landscape of oral and head and neck cancers, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Identification and validation of key biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis• Molecular signaling pathways driving carcinogenesis and progression• Advances in liquid biopsy and minimally invasive diagnostic approaches• Development and preclinical/clinical testing of targeted therapies or immunotherapies• Integration of genomic, transcriptomic, or proteomic data toward precision medicine Topic editors: VUI KING VINCENT-CHONG, Shamshad Alam, Lee Peng Karen-Ng Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76419/molecular-pathogenesis-and-targeted-therapies-in-oral-and-head-and-neck-cancers
