Molecular pathology and genetics of brain tumors

Brain tumor research has undergone significant transformation with the integration of molecular pathology and genetic profiling, enabling a deeper understanding of tumor biology beyond classical histopathological features. Traditionally, brain tumor diagnosis relied primarily on microscopic examination, which, while valuable, faced limitations in predicting prognosis and selecting targeted therapies. Recent advances in molecular genetics have uncovered numerous biomarkers and genetic alterations that influence tumor behavior, prognosis, and therapeutic response, thus creating new standards for diagnostic neuropathology.This Research Topic aims to tackle the evolving landscape of brain tumor classification by embracing molecular and genetic data alongside conventional neuropathological assessment. We seek to highlight how novel biomarkers, next-generation sequencing, and integrative molecular analyses can improve diagnostic accuracy, guide prognostication, and inform personalized therapy. By encouraging contributions that elucidate the molecular underpinnings of diverse brain tumor subtypes, we hope to bridge gaps between laboratory findings and clinical practice, fostering the translation of molecular diagnostics into routine patient care. Further, we aim to stimulate discussion on unresolved questions, such as the clinical significance of emerging genetic alterations and the challenges of implementing advanced molecular tools in resource-limited settings.This Research Topic welcomes research related to the molecular pathology and genetics of brain tumors.
