Molecular Surveillance and Diagnostics for Enteric Viral Pathogens
Enteric viruses such as norovirus, rotavirus, astrovirus, and sapovirus remain important causes of gastroenteritis across age groups and geographic settings. Molecular diagnostics have improved detection and enabled multiplex testing, while genomic surveillance has revealed substantial viral diversity, rapid genotype replacement, and the emergence of variants with altered epidemiological or antigenic properties. Continued monitoring is particularly important following rotavirus vaccination, as population immunity may influence strain distribution and selection. Host susceptibility is also shaped by interactions between viral capsid proteins and histo-blood group antigens, although the clinical and epidemiological implications are not fully resolved. Differences in testing capacity, sampling, nomenclature, and surveillance coverage continue to limit global comparisons. This Research Topic aims to strengthen molecular diagnosis, genomic surveillance, and mechanistic understanding of major enteric viral pathogens. It will focus on norovirus, rotavirus, astrovirus, and sapovirus, including global and regional studies, while excluding enteroviruses covered by the existing “Enterovirus Surveillance in Europe and Beyond” Research Topic. To gather further insights in enteric viral molecular epidemiology and diagnostics, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Development and validation of Multiplex PCR and syndromic diagnostic panelso Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic detectiono Genotype surveillance of Norovirus GII variant and emerging recombinantso Whole-Genome Sequencing approaches for enteric virus outbreak investigationo Hepatitis A and E virus molecular epidemiology in endemic and non-endemic regionso Zoonotic and cross-species transmission of enteric viruseso Bioinformatic tools and pipelines for enteric virus genotypingo Rotavirus genotype distribution and vaccine-associated strain replacemento Astrovirus and sapovirus molecular epidemiologyo Viral evolution, recombination, and antigenic variationo Histo-blood group antigens and host-receptor interactionso Environmental and wastewater surveillanceo Diagnostic performance, quality assurance, and standardisationo Global and regional surveillance networks and outbreak investigation Topic editors: Hussein Alburkat, Dr AJAY Kumar Yadav Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85780/molecular-surveillance-and-diagnostics-for-enteric-viral-pathogens
