Motivational Functioning in Educational Settings: Psychological Processes, Beliefs, and Professional Well-Being

Motivation plays a central role in the learning, professional development, and effectiveness of educators and educational stakeholders. Growing attention has been directed toward understanding how psychological factors — including self-efficacy beliefs, achievement goals, psychological empowerment, and implicit beliefs about professional competence — shape motivational processes among teachers, school leaders, and academic staff. This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for empirical studies and systematic reviews examining the psychological foundations of motivational functioning across diverse educational contexts.Full description:Educational settings present unique motivational challenges. Teachers and educational professionals navigate increasing accountability pressures, evolving professional demands, and complex interpersonal environments — all of which interact with individual psychological characteristics to shape motivation, engagement, and professional well-being. Despite growing research interest, the psychological mechanisms underlying motivational functioning in educational contexts remain incompletely understood, particularly across diverse cultural and institutional settings. This Research Topic conceptualizes motivational functioning as rooted in individual psychological processes — including beliefs about competence, self-efficacy, achievement goal orientations, implicit theories of ability, and psychological needs for autonomy and relatedness — and examines how these interact with contextual conditions to influence educator engagement, well-being, and professional effectiveness. Contributions are encouraged to examine the psychological mechanisms through which contextual factors such as collegial relationships, perceived psychological safety, and collective efficacy beliefs shape individual motivation and professional functioning.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:psychological antecedents and consequences of teacher motivation and work engagementself-efficacy beliefs, achievement goals, and goal orientations among educatorspsychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) and their role in professional well-beingimplicit beliefs about professional ability and their influence on motivation and persistencepsychological safety and collective efficacy as cognitive and motivational constructsburnout as a motivational and psychological depletion processmotivational dynamics across the professional lifespan of educatorspsychological mechanisms underlying professional commitment and agencymotivation and beliefs about learning in teacher professional developmentThis Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Systematic Reviews, and Meta-Analyses employing rigorous empirical methods, including multilevel modeling and longitudinal designs, to advance understanding of motivational psychology in educational settings.
