Multi-objective Forest Management under Global Change: Forest Ecosystem Response Mechanisms and Resource Utilization

Against the backdrop of global change—characterized by climate warming, shifting precipitation patterns, and intensified anthropogenic disturbances—the ecological and economic values of forest ecosystems are facing increasingly complex challenges. Forests worldwide encompass a broad continuum, ranging from natural, undisturbed, and minimally managed forests to intensively managed plantations and production forests. Understanding forest ecosystem responses to global change is essential for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem service maintenance, climate adaptation, and sustainable resource use. This Research Topic focuses on forest ecosystem service functions within the context of global change, with an emphasis on analyzing response and adaptation mechanisms, as well as exploring multi-objective utilization strategies for forest resources. We cordially invite original research, reviews, and model-based projection papers covering the following themes:• Multi-objective Forest Management Paradigms and Practices:Silvicultural techniques to enhance forest resilience and multifunctionality, optimization of stand structure, and management strategies for understory space.• Multiple Environmental Stressors and Ecological Responses:Quantifying the responses of forests to compound stressors (e.g., climate change, pests, and diseases), and constructing dynamic ecological threshold systems encompassing physiology, growth, and population dynamics.• Forest Ecosystem Modeling for Future Climate Scenarios:Coupling ecological thresholds, forest ecosystem processes, and climate scenarios to assess long-term ecological risks, support adaptive conservation and management decisions, and guide strategies such as site–species matching, restoration planning, and adjustment of management cycles.
