Multi-omics in Forest Trees
Forest trees play a crucial role in global ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainable provision of resources. However, their complex genomes, long life cycles, and varied environmental interactions present significant challenges for traditional genetic and molecular research approaches. Recent advances in sequencing technologies and integrative bioinformatics have enabled multi-omics strategies—including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics—to unravel the intricate biological networks within forest trees. This Research Topic aims to showcase cutting-edge applications and developments in multi-omics analyses to address fundamental and applied questions in forest tree biology. We invite contributions that explore the integration of multi-omics data to: • decode genetic diversity and population structure, • elucidate the molecular basis of growth, adaptation, and stress responses, • enhance disease and pest resistance, • optimize wood formation and other economically important traits, and • understand ecological interactions within forest ecosystems. We encourage submissions featuring innovative bioinformatics tools, data integration methodologies, large-scale omics datasets, and case studies that leverage multi-omics for tree improvement and forest management. Reviews and perspectives highlighting current advances, challenges, and future directions in forest tree multi-omics research are also welcome.
