Multimodal neuroimaging and clinical management of neurovascular disorders: integrating advanced MRI, CT, and intraoperative techniques

Neurovascular disorders represent a significant clinical challenge within neurological and neurosurgical practice. Precise diagnosis and effective management critically depend on accurate visualization of the vasculature and brain tissue. Recent advancements in neuroimaging—particularly the refinement of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and intraoperative imaging techniques—have significantly enhanced the ability to detect, characterize, and treat these disorders with greater precision. Key questions persist regarding the optimal integration and interpretation of multimodal imaging data to inform treatment decisions, bridge the gap between anatomical and functional assessment, and improve patient outcomes. Recent studies have demonstrated that combined imaging modalities can yield complementary insights, reduce the risk of misdiagnosis, and identify nuanced pathological features that may affect clinical practice. While the clinical and research communities have made progress in optimizing individual imaging techniques, there remains a pressing need to unify these modalities into practical, evidence-based protocols. Emerging literature supports the potential for multimodal approaches to yield more detailed preoperative assessments and facilitate intraoperative navigation, but challenges endure in standardizing workflows, minimizing invasiveness, and maximizing cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the translation of these advancements into routine clinical care is still evolving, necessitating robust studies on their efficacy and validation in diverse patient populations. This gap highlights the importance of a comprehensive exploration into the synergistic use of advanced imaging tools for neurovascular disorders. This Research Topic aims to foster a holistic understanding of how combined advanced MRI, CT, and intraoperative imaging techniques can transform the clinical management of neurovascular diseases. The objective is to elucidate best practices for leveraging multimodal data, to address unresolved questions about diagnostic accuracy, prognostication, and intraoperative guidance, and to assess the utility and limitations of novel protocols in varied healthcare settings. This Research Topic welcomes studies and perspectives that cross traditional boundaries between radiology, neurology, neurosurgery, and clinical informatics. Submissions are encouraged that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:○ Integration strategies for MRI, CT, and intraoperative imaging in neurovascular diagnostics○ Innovations in real-time intraoperative imaging and navigation○ Quantitative imaging biomarkers for risk stratification and therapeutic decision-making○ Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for image analysis in neurovascular disorders○ Multimodal imaging protocols for acute interventions (e.g., stroke, aneurysm)○ Challenges and solutions for translating advanced imaging protocols to clinical practice○ Case studies and clinical trials assessing patient outcomes following multimodal imaging-guided intervention Topic editors: Kevin Agyemang, Bin Xu, Nirav Patel Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78854/multimodal-neuroimaging-and-clinical-management-of-neurovascular-disorders-integrating-advanced-mri-ct-and-intraoperative-techniques
