Multiscale Design of Polymeric Nanofiber Composites for Advanced Functional Applications

Multiscale polymeric nanofiber composites have attracted increasing attention due to their ability to combine the lightweight, flexibility, and processability of polymer matrices with the unique structural advantages of nanofibrous architectures. The incorporation of one-dimensional nanofibers and hierarchical fiber networks enables remarkable enhancements in mechanical strength, thermal transport, electrical insulation, flame retardancy, and multifunctional performance. Recent advances in nanofiber fabrication technologies, hierarchical assembly strategies, and interfacial chemistry have significantly expanded the design space of polymer-based nanofiber composites. These materials are being actively explored for emerging applications in aerospace, flexible electronics, thermal management, energy systems, and advanced protective structures. However, challenges remain in achieving precise multiscale structural control, scalable processing, and a fundamental understanding of structure–property–function relationships across nano- to macroscopic levels. The goal of this Research Topic is to address current challenges and emerging opportunities in the multiscale design, processing, and functional optimization of polymeric nanofiber composites. In particular, this topic aims to highlight how rational structural engineering, interfacial regulation, and advanced manufacturing strategies can be employed to tailor macroscopic properties and enable multifunctional integration. Recent progress in hierarchical fiber alignment, interface compatibilization, and functional filler incorporation has provided effective pathways to overcome traditional trade-offs between mechanical robustness, functional performance, and manufacturability. By bringing together fundamental investigations and application-oriented studies, this Research Topic seeks to promote deeper insights into multiscale structure–property relationships and accelerate the development of next-generation polymeric nanofiber composites for advanced functional applications. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Reviews, and Perspectives related to polymeric nanofiber composites and multiscale structural design.
