Multiscale Fillers in Polymer Composites: Halloysite Nanotube Applications and Effects

In materials science, the study of polymer composites reinforced with multiscale fillers has become increasingly significant due to their enhanced mechanical properties and potential applications across diverse industries. Recent research has focused on the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of polypropylene (PP) reinforced with microscale glass fibers (GF) and nanoscale halloysite nanotubes (HNT). Investigations have revealed that the synergistic effect of these multiscale fillers can lower the energy barrier for nucleation and accelerate the formation of stable nuclei. The Mo, Avrami, Ozawa, and Friedman models have been employed to elucidate the crystallization behavior of these composites. Additionally, modification of HNTs with zinc oxide (ZnO) has been shown to improve significantly the mechanical properties of butyl rubber composites. Despite these advances, there remains a need to better understand the structural, energetic, and mechanical implications of filler incorporation in polymer matrices, as well as the potential biomedical applications of HNT-based nanohybrids. This Research Topic aims to deepen understanding of the interactions between polymer matrices and multiscale fillers, particularly halloysite nanotubes, and their consequent effects on material properties. It seeks to explore the underlying mechanisms driving the enhanced performance of these composites, the optimization of filler incorporation methods, and the potential for novel applications in areas such as slow-release fertilizers and controlled drug delivery systems. The goal is to bridge the gap between experimental findings and practical applications, providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of multiscale fillers in the development of advanced materials. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of polymer composites with multiscale fillers• Surface modification of halloysite nanotubes and its impact on composite properties• Characterization and modeling of filler–polymer interactions• Biomedical applications of halloysite nanotube-based nanohybrids• Development of slow-release fertilizers using halloysite nanotubes as inhibitors• Controlled-release drug delivery systems utilizing halloysite nanotubes• Synergistic effects of fillers on the mechanical properties of polymer composites• Environmental impact and sustainability of halloysite nanotube-enhanced materials• Advances in the structural analysis of halloysite nanotubes and their composites Topic editors: Deepak Rawtani M.E,PhD (CEng.), NITASHA KHATRI Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79239/multiscale-fillers-in-polymer-composites-halloysite-nanotube-applications-and-effects
