Multiscale modeling of metabolism in animal systems: integrating molecular regulation with whole body physiology
Metabolism underlies core physiological functions in animals, linking enzyme activity and cellular homeostasis to tissue specialization and whole body adaptation. Its complexity arises from interactions between molecular pathways, signaling networks, and environmental inputs. Post translational modifications such as phosphorylation, O GlcNAcylation, and redox regulation dynamically modulate enzymes and fluxes in response to nutrients and stress, shaping metabolic outcomes across tissues. Yet integrating this regulation into coherent, predictive models remains a challenge. Advances in metabolomics, phosphoproteomics, metabolic imaging, and computational modeling are beginning to bridge molecular and organismal perspectives, promising mechanistic insight into how metabolic dysregulation contributes to diseases including cancer, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders. This Research Topic aims to deepen understanding of multiscale metabolic organization through experimental, computational, and integrative approaches. The goal is to link biochemical regulation with physiological outcomes, revealing how metabolism adapts or fails under developmental, nutritional, and pathological conditions. By merging modeling, high resolution analytics, and AI driven data integration, the collection will promote frameworks that explain metabolic behavior and support translational applications in biomedicine and drug discovery. To gather further insights into metabolism as a multiscale biological system, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Post translational regulation of metabolic enzymes and networks (phosphorylation, O GlcNAc, redox modifications)• Signaling–metabolism crosstalk at the cellular and systems level• Multiscale models connecting intracellular networks with tissue and organismal physiology• Metabolic flux analysis in animal systems and disease models• Phosphoproteomic and metabolomic approaches to systems metabolism• Optogenetic and imaging based tools for probing metabolic regulation in vivo• Artificial intelligence and machine learning for metabolic prediction and data integration• Metabolic dysfunction in neurological, neuromuscular, and cardiometabolic disorders• Systems approaches to metabolism in cancer and obesity• Sex specific metabolic regulation and disease susceptibility• Modeling metabolic adaptation, dysfunction, and therapeutic responseWe welcome Original Research, Methods, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles.
