Myelin in learning and memory circuits

For the last decade, many significant progresses have been made in the field of myelin study. One of the most interesting ones is the functional role of myelin changes during the process of learning and memory. Several reports have shown that the oligodendrocyte lineage changes are necessary for different types of learning and memory, pointing out that oligodendrocytes play critical roles during this important process. Many exciting findings have been reported. Still, critical questions remain unsolved, especially the molecular mechanism of oligodendrocyte lineage cells remodeling the neural circuits of learning and memory. New approaches, new methods and new findings are expected soon in this fast-expanding field. The functional roles of oligodendrocytes in learning and memory are fascinating.  Still, this is a quite new field, and it requires further investigation. We are trying to recruit current studies in the field of oligodendrocyte lineage cells affecting learning and memory, presenting the updated progress to the general researchers in the field of cellular neuroscience. By doing so, we hope to arouse more interest among neuroscientists and to attract more research and funding into this field. New research on this important topic will help us to better understand the process of learning and memory at both circuit levels and molecular levels. The scope of this Research Topic is the functional roles of oligodendrocyte lineage cells, including oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) and oligodendrocytes (Ols), in different types of learning and memory. We especially encourage papers on clinical findings working on humans, as well as studies on lab model animals. We also welcome studies on all different types of ensheathing cells that form myelin or myelin-like structures over axons in the nervous system, such as Schwann cells and some specialized cells in invertebrates. We are seeking original research articles. Reviews and manuscripts introducing innovative methods are also acceptable as long as they are under the proposed Research Topic.
