Nanobiosensors for Detecting and Monitoring Drug and Insecticide Resistance in Insect-Borne Disease Vectors

Insect vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and sandflies transmit malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis, and other diseases that impose a heavy global health burden. Control is increasingly undermined by two forms of resistance: drug resistance in the pathogens and insecticide resistance in the vectors. Because resistance often spreads silently, slow or insensitive detection allows resistant pathogen strains and resistant vector populations to expand before control programmes can respond. Conventional laboratory assays are frequently too slow, costly, or infrastructure-dependent for the endemic, low-resource settings where they are most needed. Nanobiosensors and nanoscale diagnostic materials offer faster, more sensitive, and field-deployable ways to detect resistance markers in both vectors and pathogens, supporting timely, evidence-based decisions in vector surveillance and disease management. The goal of this collection is to advance nanobiosensor and nanodiagnostic tools for the early detection and surveillance of resistance in insect-borne diseases, with a clear focus on the vector. This includes rapid identification of drug-resistant pathogens carried by vectors, biosensing platforms for monitoring insecticide-resistance mechanisms and markers in vector populations, and point-of-care or wearable devices suited to endemic, low-resource settings. We are particularly interested in work that links molecular resistance markers to practical field readouts, that improves sensitivity, specificity, and stability under real-world conditions, and that supports large-scale entomological monitoring. The collection also welcomes contributions on data integration, validation against reference methods, and the biosafety and translational considerations of deploying these tools. Together, these advances aim to strengthen resistance surveillance and inform sustainable vector-control and treatment strategies. This Research Topic brings together nanoscale sensing research for detecting and monitoring resistance in insect vectors and the pathogens they carry. We welcome themes such as:- Nanobiosensors for rapid detection of drug-resistant pathogens in vectors- Biosensing platforms for monitoring insecticide-resistance markers and mechanisms in vector populations- Point-of-care and wearable diagnostic devices for endemic, low-resource settings- Nanomaterials that improve sensitivity, specificity, and field stability of resistance assays- Integration of sensor data into entomological and epidemiological surveillance- Validation, standardisation, biosafety, and field translation of these systemsTo keep the collection focused and complementary to related work, submissions centered on vector killing, nano-formulated insecticides, or therapeutic drug and vaccine delivery fall outside its scope. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, and Methods articles.
