Nanobiotechnology-Enabled Modulation of Gut Microbiota: Functional Mechanisms, Targeted Delivery, and Diagnostic Innovations

The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in host health through diverse and interconnected functional mechanisms. It actively participates in metabolic regulation and microbial metabolism — most notably through the fermentation of dietary fiber to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) — which in turn modulate multiple metabolic pathways and signal transduction cascades. Beyond metabolism, a balanced gut microbial community is essential for immune regulation and inflammatory homeostasis, preserving gut barrier integrity, reducing intestinal permeability, and preventing systemic infiltration of harmful substances. Disruption of this equilibrium is increasingly linked to a wide spectrum of metabolic and inflammatory disorders.Understanding the functional mechanisms underlying host-microbe interaction is therefore critical — both for advancing basic science and for developing targeted preventive and therapeutic strategies. Crucially, realising the translational potential of these insights requires precise tools for intervention and monitoring at the nanoscale. Engineered nanosystems — including smart nanoparticles, nanocarriers, and nanostructured delivery platforms — offer unprecedented control over the stability, targeted delivery, and controlled release of bioactive molecules that modulate gut microbiota composition and function. Complementary nanodiagnostic tools and nanosensors further enable real-time, high-resolution monitoring of microbiota-associated changes in intestinal physiology and host immune status. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge studies at the interface of gut microbiota biology and nanobiotechnology-enabled intervention and analysis.
