Nanobiotechnology in cardiovascular medicine: Emerging mechanisms and therapeutic innovations

Nanomedicine has rapidly evolved as a transformative field within cardiovascular research, integrating nanotechnology with molecular medicine to address complex cardiac pathologies. In recent years, advances in nanoparticle design and the study of small extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells have provided new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia, heart failure, and myocarditis. Despite significant progress, the translation of these findings into clinical applications remains a major challenge, as questions persist regarding precise delivery mechanisms, long-term safety, and interactions between nanomaterials and cardiac tissues. Current evidence indicates that both natural and synthetic nanoparticles can modulate immune responses, promote tissue repair, and enhance drug bioavailability, making them promising tools in personalized cardiovascular medicine. Nonetheless, further research is needed to optimize their design, understand their mechanisms of action, and ensure their efficacy and safety in clinical use. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of how nanobiotechnology can be leveraged to elucidate cardiovascular disease mechanisms and to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest progress in nanoparticle-based interventions, extracellular vesicle biology, and other nanoscale strategies designed to mitigate cardiovascular damage and improve patient outcomes. By bringing together the most recent experimental and clinical findings, this Research Topic seeks to highlight both opportunities and challenges in applying nanotechnology to cardiovascular care, guiding future research toward translational success. To gather further insights into the intersection of nanoscience and cardiovascular medicine, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Design and optimization of nanoparticles for targeted cardiac therapyMechanistic studies on extracellular vesicles and their role in cardiac regenerationNanodiagnostic tools for early detection of coronary artery disease and heart failureBiocompatibility, safety, and translational potential of nanomaterials in cardiovascular applicationsIntegration of nanotechnology with imaging, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine approachesOmics and systems biology applications in nanocardiology researchClinical trials and regulatory perspectives in nano-based cardiovascular medicine.
