Nanocomposite-Enabled Electrochemical Sensors: From Material Design to Energy, Environmental, Biomedical, and Food Applications

Electrochemical sensors leveraging nanocomposites have revolutionized detection capabilities across a broad spectrum of critical fields, including energy systems, environmental surveillance, biomedical diagnostics, and food safety. The rational design and integration of advanced nanocomposites—such as magnetic nanomaterials, noble metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, carbon-based nanostructures, conductive polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and MXenes—serve as the cornerstone for enhancing sensor performance. These materials function as efficient electrode modifiers, signal amplifiers, and recognition element carriers, offering exceptional electron transfer kinetics, high surface area, tunable catalytic activity, and unique magnetic or structural properties. Such features enable highly sensitive, selective, and stable detection of diverse analytes—from gases and ions in energy devices to biomarkers, pollutants, and pathogens in complex matrices.Despite remarkable progress, key challenges persist in optimizing nanocomposite-electrode interfaces, achieving reagent-free operation, strengthening anti-interference capacity, ensuring long-term stability under practical conditions, and facilitating the translation of lab-scale prototypes into field-deployable or point-of-care devices. This Research Topic aims to highlight cutting-edge advances in nanocomposite-driven electrochemical sensing, spanning innovative material synthesis, interface engineering, mechanistic studies, and demonstrations in real-world settings.
