Nanomaterial-mediated hyperthermia: biomedical applications and mechanisms in therapy and regeneration

Nanobiotechnology has rapidly advanced our ability to manipulate and deploy nanomaterials in biomedical contexts, offering unique modalities for both therapeutic intervention and regenerative medicine. Among the most promising breakthroughs are hyperthermia strategies enabled by magnetic and photothermal nanomaterials, which can precisely induce localized heating through external magnetic fields or laser irradiation. While magnetic hyperthermia has shown significant promise in the targeted ablation of tumor tissues, and photothermia has opened new pathways for minimally invasive interventions, these technologies also harbor the potential to revolutionize drug delivery and tissue healing processes. Despite successful preclinical outcomes and a growing array of engineered “smart” nanoplatforms, important gaps remain in optimally harnessing these approaches beyond oncology and toward broader biomedical applications. This Research Topic aims to explore and integrate the most recent progress in nanomaterial-mediated hyperthermia, encompassing both magnetic and photothermal techniques, with a special focus on their roles not only in cancer therapy but also in triggered drug release and tissue regeneration. Contributors are encouraged to address fundamental and applied questions—such as the mechanisms governing nanomaterial heating efficiency, biocompatibility, and targeting, as well as the development of multifunctional systems that synergize hyperthermia with controlled therapeutic payload release or enhanced tissue repair. We invite works that span novel nanomaterial synthesis, innovative biomedical device development, translational strategies, and proof-of-concept studies detailing emerging applications that leverage the unique physical properties of nanostructures. To gather further insights into the current landscape and future potential of hyperthermia-driven nanomedicine, this Research Topic welcomes submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Design, synthesis, and characterization of magnetic and photothermal nanomaterials- Mechanisms and optimization of heating efficiency at the nanoscale- Nanomaterial-mediated hyperthermia for oncology applications- Stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems activated by hyperthermia- Integration of hyperthermia with tissue regeneration and wound healing technologies- Functionalization for enhanced targeting and biosafety- Advanced imaging and monitoring tools for nanoscale heating effects- Regulatory and translational aspects for clinical implementationWe look forward to multidisciplinary research that bridges engineering, materials science, chemistry, and biomedicine—fueling innovations that unlock the full therapeutic potential of nanomaterial-enabled hyperthermia in advanced healthcare solutions.
