Nanomaterials and nanotechnologies in next-generation antimicrobial strategies

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a major challenge in the field of global public health, driven by the pervasive misuse of antibiotics and the protracted pace of new drug discovery. The persistence and spread of multidrug-resistant microorganisms, the protective nature of microbial biofilms, and the complexity of intracellular infections frequently undermine the effectiveness of standard therapies, aggravating clinical outcomes. This escalating crisis has catalyzed interest in innovative approaches, particularly at the intersection of nanotechnology and antimicrobial science, to address the urgent need for more resilient and adaptable anti-infective solutions. Recent discoveries reveal that nanomaterials possess unique physical and chemical properties, allowing them to interact with pathogens in distinctive ways, such as membrane disruption or specific cellular targeting, which are less prone to the development of resistance. Despite impressive advances in nanoparticle design, nano-enabled delivery systems, and diagnostic tools, several open questions persist regarding their long-term safety, mechanisms of action, and translational readiness. A comprehensive understanding and strategic application of these nanoscale interactions remain crucial for harnessing their full therapeutic and preventive potential in infectious disease management. This Research Topic aims to stimulate pioneering research that leverages nanotechnology to tackle the surging threat of antimicrobial resistance and limitations of existing antimicrobial agents. It seeks to collect interdisciplinary insights into how innovative nanomaterials, delivery platforms, and diagnostic technologies can be developed, optimized, and implemented for the treatment, prevention, and monitoring of infectious diseases. By encouraging integration across fundamental research, technological innovation, and clinical application, this theme aspires to accelerate the advancement of scalable, safe, and effective nano-enabled antimicrobial interventions that can either complement or offer alternatives to conventional treatments, ultimately improving global health outcomes. To gather further insights into the development and translation of nanoscale antimicrobial solutions, we welcome articles that explore foundational research, translational studies, and practical applications in this rapidly evolving field.
