Nanoparticles as Catalysts for Enhanced Photosynthesis and Plant Stress Resilience

Nanotechnology in plant sciences is increasingly recognized for its potential to revolutionize sustainable agriculture by enhancing photosynthesis and bolstering plant resilience against environmental stressors. As climate change intensifies abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and temperature extremes, conventional strategies for crop improvement often fall short of achieving substantial gains in productivity and stability. Recent advancements have showcased the unique abilities of nanoparticles to influence key physiological and metabolic pathways in plants, including chlorophyll biosynthesis, electron transport mechanisms, and gas exchange dynamics. Studies have reported both enhancement in photosynthetic rates and increased stress tolerance following nanoparticle treatments, yet the full mechanistic understanding of these effects and their long-term consequences remains incomplete. Ongoing debates persist over the safety, sustainability, and scalability of nanoparticle use, as well as potential ecotoxicological risks tied to their application in agroecosystems. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of how nanoparticles catalyze improved photosynthetic performance and stress resilience in plants. With a focus on uncovering molecular, physiological, and nanoscale mechanisms, the goal is to unite interdisciplinary efforts that clarify nanoparticle interactions with core plant functions and adaptive responses. Key questions include how nanoparticles modulate phytohormonal signaling, nutrient uptake, and growth regulation under adverse environmental conditions, and what the implications are for crop productivity, food security, and ecological safety. By drawing together original research, comprehensive reviews, and integrative perspectives, this Topic seeks to critically evaluate the transformative potential of nanotechnologies for sustainable agriculture. For this Research Topic, studies should center on the impact of nanoparticles on photosynthetic pathways and stress adaptation, while addressing broader implications for sustainability and ecological health. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Nanoparticle-mediated regulation of chlorophyll biosynthesis and photosynthetic efficiency• Effects of nanoparticles on electron transport and gas exchange under stress• Interactions between nanoparticles and phytohormonal or nutrient signaling pathways• Multi-scale analyses integrating molecular, physiological, and agronomic data• Sustainable deployment, risk assessment, and eco-toxicological evaluations of nanomaterials in crops and soil ecosystems Topic editors: MOHAMMAD FAIZAN, Andrzej Bajguz, Shamsul Hayat, Shadma Afzal Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/74788/nanoparticles-as-catalysts-for-enhanced-photosynthesis-and-plant-stress-resilience
