Nanostructured Edible Films and Biopolymer-Based Packaging for Sustainable Food Systems
The field of sustainable food packaging is experiencing a transformative shift as nanostructured edible films and biopolymer-based materials emerge as alternatives to conventional plastics. Traditionally, single-use plastics have dominated food packaging due to their convenience, durability, and functionality, but their production and disposal are major contributors to environmental pollution and microplastic contamination. Recent research has introduced nanotechnology and biopolymer science as pathways to develop materials from renewable sources, such as polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids, with enhanced mechanical and functional properties. Despite advances in developing nano-reinforced films with improved barrier function and active properties, challenges remain in achieving consistent performance, scalability, and regulatory compliance. The conversation now centers on how best to leverage these scientific advances to create packaging solutions that balance food safety, preservation, and environmental responsibility. This Research Topic aims to accelerate progress in the design and application of nanostructured edible films and biopolymer-based packaging to advance sustainable food systems. The objective is to investigate how nanotechnology, biopolymer modification, and integration of bioactive agents can improve the structural, antimicrobial, and antioxidant performance of packaging materials. Key questions include understanding the mechanisms by which nanoscale structures impart beneficial properties, identifying factors limiting commercial adoption, evaluating biodegradability, and ensuring food safety. The goal is to foster interdisciplinary research that bridges fundamental science and applied innovation, guiding the transition toward packaging that meets both industry standards and sustainability criteria. This Research Topic is dedicated to exploring interdisciplinary approaches within the boundaries of nanostructured edible and biopolymer-based packaging for food systems, excluding unrelated packaging materials or fields not employing biodegradable or edible components. The focus will be on studies that span material synthesis, characterization, and practical application relevant to sustainable food chains. To gather further insights, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Innovative biopolymer extraction and modification techniques;- Nano-reinforcement strategies for enhanced packaging performance;- Development of active and intelligent edible coatings;- Migration, safety assessment, and toxicological evaluation of nanostructured films;- Degradation behavior and lifecycle environmental impact analysis;- Antimicrobial, antioxidant, and barrier property evaluations;- Application in packaging for fresh produce, dairy, meat, and functional foods;- Advances in fabrication, industrial scalability, and regulatory perspectives;- Real-world case studies demonstrating environmental and economic benefits.
