Nanostructured Materials for Advanced Biosensing and Biomedical Diagnostics

Nanostructured materials are revolutionizing next-generation biomedical technologies by enabling precise control over biomolecular interactions, charge transport, and catalytic activity at the nanoscale. With tunable surface chemistry, high surface area, and multifunctional properties, these materials drive significant advances in electrochemical biosensing, nanodiagnostics, wearable bioelectronics, and intelligent medical platforms. Despite this progress, designing nanostructures that ensure high biorecognition efficiency, interface stability in biological environments, and smooth integration into flexible or implantable systems remains a major challenge. Recent developments in hybrid nanomaterials that combining metal oxides, 2D materials, conductive polymers, MXenes, and quantum dots are enhancing sensitivity, selectivity, bio-signal stability, and device reliability. However, the mechanisms underlying interfacial charge transfer, biomolecular adsorption, defect chemistry, and biocompatibility are not yet fully understood, particularly when deployed in complex biological matrices. Further insight is critical for driving real-time health monitoring, early disease detection, metabolic sensing, and point-of-care diagnostics. This Research Topic aims to showcase the latest advances in the design, synthesis, and biomedical application of nanostructured materials for biosensing and integrated electrochemical technologies. The objective is to bridge material engineering and practical biomedical applications, stimulating progress in areas such as glucose and metabolic biosensors, nanodiagnostic platforms, wearable and implantable devices, and hybrid systems that combine sensing functionality with energy harvesting or self-powered operation. The scope of this Research Topic covers advances and limitations in nanostructured materials for bio-integrated sensing and diagnostics.
