Nanostructured polymeric carriers for stabilization and stimuli-responsive delivery of bioactive molecules

In the field of nanobiotechnology, the quest to improve the therapeutic efficacy and precision of biologically active molecules is driving innovation in polymeric delivery systems. Traditional delivery methods often face significant challenges, such as rapid degradation of sensitive compounds, insufficient targeting, and uncontrolled release rates, which hinder the full therapeutic potential of both natural and synthetic bioactives. To address these hurdles, recent research has focused on engineering nanostructured polymeric carriers—such as functionalized nanoparticles, electrospun nanofibers, and injectable hydrogels—that can stabilize bioactive agents and provide finely tuned, stimuli-responsive release profiles. These advances leverage smart material design, surface engineering, and nanoscale fabrication techniques to protect molecules from harsh physiological environments, facilitate controlled delivery at target sites, and optimize biological interactions. This Research Topic aims to spotlight recent breakthroughs in the design, fabrication, and functionalization of polymeric nanomatrices specifically developed for the protection and smart, controlled release of bioactive molecules. A primary goal is to consolidate emerging strategies that utilize stimuli-responsive and targeted polymeric carriers to maximize bioavailability and therapeutic index, with particular emphasis on preclinical and translational relevance. By capturing insights across formulation science, nanostructure–bioactivity relationships, and advanced in vitro/in vivo models, this Research Topic seeks to accelerate the journey of intelligent delivery platforms from bench to bedside.Focusing on nanoscale engineering and biomedical integration, this Research Topic welcomes original research, reviews, and perspectives that cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:- Fabrication and characterization of functional nanostructured polymeric carriers- Integration of smart, stimuli-responsive features (e.g., pH, temperature, enzyme responsiveness) for on-demand bioactive release- Strategies to improve the stability and bioavailability of delicate therapeutic agents- Surface modification and targeting for precision delivery to specific tissues or cells- Evaluation of in vitro and in vivo performance for therapeutic efficacy and safety- Advanced bioimaging and monitoring of delivery kinetics- Pathways for translational development and regulatory considerations of smart polymeric nanocarriers Topic editors: Christian Chapa, Luis Exequiel Ibarra, Suma Sarojini Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80508/nanostructured-polymeric-carriers-for-stabilization-and-stimuli-responsive-delivery-of-bioactive-molecules
