Nanotechnology's Role in Revolutionizing Sustainable Food Safety

Food safety is being reshaped by nanotechnology, which offers new tools to detect, monitor, and control contaminants with greater speed, sensitivity, and precision than many conventional approaches. Nano-enabled biosensors, antimicrobial nanomaterials, smart packaging, and targeted delivery systems are attracting growing interest because they can help address persistent food safety challenges, including foodborne pathogens, chemical residues, toxins, spoilage, and trace contaminants. At the same time, the field is increasingly focused on sustainability: reducing food loss and waste, improving shelf life, lowering resource use, and developing safer, scalable materials for real-world food systems. This Research Topic aims to highlight innovative, scientifically rigorous advances in nanotechnology that improve food safety while supporting sustainable food production, processing, packaging, and distribution. We welcome studies that connect food science technology with nutrition and consumer health, especially work that moves beyond proof-of-concept toward validation, safety assessment, scalability, and practical application. By bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives, this Topic seeks to advance safer, smarter, and more resilient food systems aligned with global health and sustainability goals.Themes of interest include:• Nano-enabled detection of foodborne pathogens, allergens, mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and other contaminants• Smart, active, and intelligent packaging systems for real-time monitoring, spoilage indication, and shelf-life extension• Antimicrobial and antifouling nanomaterials for safer food contact surfaces, preservation, and processing environmentsSustainability, scalability, toxicological evaluation, regulatory considerations, and life-cycle assessment of food-related nanotechnologies• Translation of nanotechnology into practical food safety solutions across supply chains, with relevance to human nutrition and consumer protection Topic editors: Vivek K.
