Natural Compounds, Probiotics, and Redox Biology in Autoimmune Ocular Diseases: From Mechanisms to Therapy
Autoimmune ocular diseases, including uveitis, scleritis, and dry eye syndromes, remain a major cause of vision impairment worldwide. Their complex immunopathogenesis involves dysregulated T-cell responses, cytokine networks, and oxidative stress, which collectively drive chronic inflammation and tissue damage. Recent advances in redox biology have revealed how oxidative imbalance contributes to immune dysfunction and disease progression, while translational studies highlight the potential of natural compounds and probiotics to restore immune tolerance and redox homeostasis. Bioactive phytochemicals with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, alongside probiotics influencing the gut–eye axis, represent promising adjuncts to conventional therapies. This Research Topic aims to integrate mechanistic insights with emerging therapeutic strategies, emphasizing the role of redox regulation and natural immunomodulators in advancing personalized interventions for autoimmune ocular diseases. Contributions spanning basic science, translational research, and clinical perspectives are encouraged.Autoimmune ocular diseases pose a significant challenge due to their complex immunopathogenesis, which involves dysregulated immune responses, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation leading to progressive vision loss. Current therapeutic options are often limited, focusing primarily on symptom management rather than addressing underlying mechanisms. A major gap exists in translating mechanistic insights into effective, targeted interventions. This Research Topic seeks to address this gap by integrating advances in redox biology, cancer immunology, and the immunogenicity of natural compounds with emerging therapeutic strategies. By exploring the role of oxidative imbalance in disease progression, identifying redox-sensitive biomarkers, and evaluating the immunomodulatory potential of probiotics and phytochemicals, we aim to highlight novel approaches that restore immune tolerance and redox homeostasis. Ultimately, this collection will foster interdisciplinary dialogue and promote translational research that bridges basic science with clinical applications, paving the way for innovative therapies in autoimmune ocular diseases. This Research Topic invites contributions that explore the intersection of immunopathogenesis, redox biology, and therapeutic innovation in autoimmune ocular diseases. Specific themes include, but not limited: - oxidative stress and immune dysregulation- redox-sensitive biomarkers and translational approaches- parallels with cancer immunology- the immunogenicity of natural compounds- the role of probiotics in modulating immune tolerance and the gut–eye axis.- computational approaches, including systems biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, and network modeling to predict disease progression, identify therapeutic targets, and optimize drug delivery strategies. We particularly welcome studies that integrate mechanistic insights with clinical relevance, highlighting novel therapeutic strategies, drug delivery systems and computational as well. Manuscript types of interest include original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, case studies, and perspectives that advance understanding of disease mechanisms or propose innovative interventions. Interdisciplinary submissions spanning immunology, pharmacology, oncology, and natural product research are strongly encouraged.Articles focusing solely on redox biology or oxidative stress, without an immunological dimension, fall outside the scope of this journal Topic editors: Dr. Mohammad Yasir, Tabinda Hasan, Sandeep Chaudhary, Alok Shiomurti Tripathi, Rahul Kumar Maurya Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76827/natural-compounds-probiotics-and-redox-biology-in-autoimmune-ocular-diseases-from-mechanisms-to-therapy
