Natural Organic Matter in Natural and Engineered Environments: Dynamics, Transformations, and Environmental Effects
Natural Organic Matter (NOM) is a complex mixture of organic materials found in various environments, including air, soils, water bodies, and sediments. It plays a critical role in ecological processes, influencing nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and the behavior of contaminants. In both natural and engineered settings, NOM undergoes dynamic transformations driven by physical, chemical, and biological processes. Understanding these dynamics is essential for assessing the environmental effects of NOM, particularly in the context of carbon cycling, environmental pollution, climate change, and land-use changes. The primary goal of this Research Topic is to compile and disseminate cutting-edge research on the dynamics and transformations of NOM in both natural and engineered environments. We aim to enhance the understanding of how NOM interacts with various environmental factors and its implications for ecosystem health and management practices. This Research Topic invites contributions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Novel analytical techniques for characterizing NOM.• Sources, composition, variations and transformation of NOM in natural and engineering systems.• Association between NOM and greenhouse gases• Interactions between NOM and microbial communities in various environments.• The role of NOM in nutrient cycling and environmental. • Effects of NOM on the transport and fate of contaminant.• The role of NOM in mitigating environmental contaminants and enhancing ecosystem resilience.• Modeling approaches to predict NOM behavior in different environmental scenarios.• Engineering solutions for managing NOM for air quality, water treatment and soil remediation.
