Natural Products for Alzheimer's Disease, Depression, and Related Disorders: From Discovery to Mechanisms
The incidence and mortality rates of neurological diseases are increasing annually, with a trend toward affecting younger populations, severely impacting patients' quality of life and exacerbating the societal healthcare burden. These diseases encompass neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, as well as various other types including depression and dementia due to cerebrovascular disease. Their pathogenesis is complex, involving neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, deficiency in brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and reduced cholinergic activity. Natural products, as the oldest source of medicines, continue to provide crucial support for new drug development due to their rich chemical and functional diversity. Multiple modern pharmacological studies have shown that natural product active molecules such as flavonoids and organic acids have good therapeutic effects on neurological diseases. This research topic aims to collect cutting-edge investigations on natural products for the intervention of neurological disorders. We welcome studies spanning from compound discovery and identification to mechanistic exploration, focusing on the molecular, cellular, and neural circuit mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of natural products against cognitive and mood impairments. Then provide critical theoretical and experimental support for the development of safe and efficient neuropsychiatric natural product drugs. This topic warmly welcomes high-quality submissions focusing on original research involving natural products, including plant extracts, marine and microbial compounds, as well as traditional medicinal formulations. We accept original research articles, comprehensive reviews, mini-reviews, and brief reports. Specific themes include, but are not limited to:Studies on the efficacy and mechanisms of bioactive natural product molecules (e.g., flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, organic acids) in neurological diseases;Regulation of neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cholinergic pathways;Synergistic therapeutic strategies combining natural products with conventional drugs;Structure–activity relationship analysis and drug screening based on neuroprotective effects.
