Natural Products in Plant–Fungus Interactions: Ecological Roles and Applications in Agroecosystems
Plant–fungus interactions constitute a central aspect of plant health and ecosystem dynamics, encompassing a spectrum from mutualistic to pathogenic relationships mediated by a vast diversity of natural products. In agricultural systems, fungal pathogens pose a considerable threat, causing major crop yield losses and jeopardizing food security globally. Their control traditionally depends on synthetic fungicides, which, despite their efficacy, often result in environmental pollution, non-target toxicity, and the development of resistant fungal strains. Recent research in chemical ecology and omics technologies has expanded our understanding of how natural products influence plant–fungus interactions, providing valuable insights into the ecological functions of bioactive compounds and their potential as sustainable tools for disease management. However, further investigation is needed to decipher the mechanisms underpinning these complex interactions and translate this knowledge into reliable biocontrol strategies. This Research Topic aims to explore the ecological and biochemical foundations of plant–fungus interactions, with a particular focus on the role of natural products in modulating these relationships and their potential in sustainable crop protection. It seeks to address key questions such as: how do natural products shape fungal pathogenicity, plant defense responses, and microbiome dynamics? What molecular and ecological mechanisms govern their activity? By integrating chemical, molecular, and ecological perspectives, this topic aspires to identify new bioactive compounds and innovative formulations that can reduce dependency on synthetic fungicides and enhance the resilience of agroecosystems. Contributions providing mechanistic insights, novel methodologies, or applied approaches that support this goal are highly encouraged. This Research Topic encompasses both basic and applied studies focusing on plant–fungus interactions across diverse agroecosystems, with a particular emphasis on cereal crops and post-harvest systems. To gather further insights in the ecological and functional diversity of natural products in these interactions, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Ecological and chemical roles of natural products in plant–fungus communicationDiscovery and characterization of bioactive compounds influencing fungal pathogenicity and plant defenseMolecular mechanisms and signaling pathways underlying metabolite-mediated interactionsEffects of natural products on the structure and function of the plant-associated microbiomeChemical ecology of cereal pathogens and mycotoxin regulation in pre- and post-harvest systemsDevelopment and application of natural product–based formulations for disease controlWe welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Methods, and Perspectives that align with the aims and scope outlined above.
