Navigating Diagnostic and Therapeutic Frontiers of Pediatric Liver Tumors

This Research Topic addresses the pressing questions surrounding the diagnosis and management of liver tumors in pediatric patients. Liver tumors in children encompass a diverse group of malignant and benign entities, ranging from the most common malignancies such as hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, to rarer forms such as fibrolamellar carcinoma (FL-HCC), as well as benign lesions including hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia, mesenchymal hamartoma, and embryonal sarcoma. Despite significant advancements, these tumors continue to pose substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, owing to their varied clinicopathologic features, their frequent occurrence in otherwise healthy young individuals, and the difficulty of distinguishing between entities with overlapping presentations. Fibrolamellar carcinoma, for example, remains particularly challenging to diagnose due to its unique clinicopathologic profile.This Research Topic aims to explore the latest molecular and imaging techniques used in the diagnosis of pediatric liver tumors, to debate the effectiveness of current and emerging therapeutic strategies, and to investigate the role of genetic and environmental factors in disease onset and progression. By bringing together insights across the spectrum of pediatric liver tumors, the collection seeks to enhance clinical outcomes, support earlier and more accurate diagnosis, and inform future research priorities.We welcome original research, reviews, case reports, and other article types addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:•Advances in molecular, genetic, and imaging-based diagnostics•Comparative effectiveness of current and emerging therapeutic strategies, including surgical, medical, and transplant approaches•The role of genetic and environmental factors in disease onset and progression•Diagnostic challenges and differential diagnosis across tumor types•Long-term outcomes, surveillance, and quality of life in pediatric patients Topic editors: Consolato M.
