Network physiology perspectives on mechanics-guided ventilation and respiratory therapeutics
Respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilation involve interacting processes across the patient, lungs, ventilator, and cardiovascular system. Although respiratory mechanics increasingly informs individualized ventilatory support and other therapies, it remains challenging to translate measurements of mechanics, regional ventilation, and cardiopulmonary interaction into reliable treatment decisions. Research has advanced bedside monitoring, imaging, and computational modeling, and has strengthened understanding of mechanical stress, lung heterogeneity, and treatment-related injury. Yet these processes are often studied in isolation, and the clinical value of integrating them as a connected patient–ventilator system remains incompletely established. A network physiology perspective may help reveal how interactions within and across these systems shape treatment response, but further work is needed to connect network-based insights with practical interventions and patient outcomes. This Research Topic aims to examine how respiratory mechanics and network physiology can inform the development, optimization, and personalization of ventilation and other respiratory therapies. It will bring together basic, translational, computational, and clinical research investigating how interactions among the patient, lungs, ventilator, and cardiovascular system influence treatment response and outcomes. It will also explore how these insights can support clinically feasible protocols, decision-support tools, and patient-specific strategies. To gather further insights into mechanics-guided respiratory therapeutics, with a focus on interactions within the patient–ventilator–lung system and its connections to other physiological systems, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Network-based models of patient–ventilator–lung interactions• Patient-specific respiratory mechanics and individualized ventilation• Mechanics-informed strategies for invasive and non-invasive respiratory support• Mechanical stress, tissue strain, and ventilator-induced lung injury• Regional ventilation, lung heterogeneity, recruitment, and their interactions• Interactions between respiratory mechanics, hemodynamics, and cardiac function• Bedside monitoring of respiratory mechanics and treatment response• Imaging and computational approaches to modeling respiratory or physiological networks• Network-based biomarkers for disease stratification, prognosis, or treatment response• Respiratory mechanics and network interactions in acute respiratory distress syndrome and other critical illnesses• Mechanics-guided treatment of chronic respiratory diseases• Translating experimental and computational findings into clinical protocols• Decision-support tools that integrate physiological measurements and patient-specific data• Comparative evaluation of ventilation strategies and patient outcomes Topic editors: Linhong Deng, Béla Suki Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/87382/network-physiology-perspectives-on-mechanics-guided-ventilation-and-respiratory-therapeutics
