Neurological Biomarkers for Drug Delivery Systems in Blood–Brain Barrier Research
The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a highly selective, semipermeable border of endothelial cells that protects the brain from potentially harmful substances in the bloodstream while allowing the passage of essential nutrients. While this protective function is vital for maintaining central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis, it also presents a formidable challenge for the delivery of therapeutic agents to treat neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s, brain tumors, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. In recent years, the integration of neurological biomarkers in drug delivery system (DDS) design has emerged as a promising strategy to overcome BBB-related delivery challenges. The development of new strategies for overcoming the BBB is considered essential, and a target-oriented approach with the use of nanotechnology may pave the way for more effective and controlled treatment of not only epilepsy but also other neurodegenerative diseases as well. This research topic focuses on identifying, validating, and utilizing neurological biomarkers to facilitate and monitor the transport of drugs across the BBB.This Research Topic aims to consolidate the latest efforts and innovations in utilizing neurological biomarkers to enhance drug delivery across the BBB. The objective is to gather research that addresses key aspects of biomarker identification, validation, and application for targeted DDS strategies, as well as to explore novel techniques for real-time tracking of therapeutic transport and distribution in the CNS. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, this Research Topic seeks to advance translational research with the potential to transform CNS disease treatment paradigms. To gather further insights in the targeted manipulation of blood–brain barrier transport using neurological biomarkers, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Identification and validation of neurological biomarkers for BBB targeting and monitoring- Nanotechnology and biomaterial-based platforms for targeted CNS drug delivery- Innovative drug delivery system designs responsive to biomarker signals- Strategies for real-time tracking and imaging of drug transport across the BBB- Preclinical and clinical evaluation of biomarker-guided therapies for neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases- Safety, efficacy, and regulatory considerations for biomarker-driven DDS development Topic editors: Christian Jorgensen, Khalil Mallah, Moriah E Katt Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/74834/neurological-biomarkers-for-drug-delivery-systems-in-blood-brain-barrier-research
