Neurological Complications of Tropical Infectious Diseases: Mechanisms, Biomarkers, and Therapeutic Strategies

Tropical infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and arthropod-borne pathogens remain significant global health concerns. Increasing evidence demonstrates that many tropical pathogens can affect the nervous system through direct invasion, immune-mediated damage, persistent inflammation, and disruption of neurological homeostasis.Advances in neuroimmunology, molecular diagnostics, neuroimaging, and multi-omics technologies have provided new opportunities to investigate pathogen–host interactions and neurological disease mechanisms. Emerging and neglected tropical infections, including malaria, dengue, Zika virus infection, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, tuberculosis, and HIV-associated neurological disorders, highlight the urgent need for improved understanding of neurological involvement and development of effective interventions.Tropical infectious diseases continue to cause substantial neurological morbidity worldwide, particularly in regions with high disease burden and limited healthcare resources. Neurological complications, including encephalitis, meningitis, neuropathy, cognitive impairment, and long-term neurological dysfunction, represent major contributors to disability and poor quality of life among affected populations. However, the mechanisms driving neurological injury, reliable biomarkers for early detection, and effective therapeutic approaches remain insufficiently understood. This Research Topic aims to integrate recent advances from neuroscience, infectious diseases, immunology, and translational medicine to improve understanding of neurological complications associated with tropical infections. By highlighting molecular mechanisms, diagnostic innovations, and therapeutic strategies, this collection seeks to promote interdisciplinary approaches for improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological consequences caused by tropical pathogens. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and translational studies focusing on neurological complications associated with tropical infectious diseases. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Mechanisms of pathogen neuroinvasion and neurological injury;• Neuroimmune responses, neuroinflammation, and immune-mediated neurological damage;• Host–pathogen interactions affecting the nervous system;• Biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and disease monitoring;• Neuroimaging and molecular diagnostic approaches;• Neurological manifestations of emerging and neglected tropical infections;• Therapeutic strategies, neuroprotective approaches, and rehabilitation;• Long-term neurological and functional outcomes after tropical infections.Submissions from researchers in infectious diseases, neurology, neuroscience, immunology, epidemiology, and global health are particularly encouraged.
