New Approach Methodologies in Fungal Genomics and Evolution
Advances in sequencing technologies and computational biology are transforming the study of fungal genomics and evolution at an unprecedented pace. Long-read sequencing, single-cell genomics, and metagenomics from complex environmental substrates are revealing fungal diversity and genomic architecture in ways previously inaccessible. Yet the integration of these approaches into standardised, widely applicable pipelines for mycological research remains an active and open challenge. This Research Topic offers a forum specifically for methodological innovation in fungal genomics, distinct from work reporting new biological findings using established methods. The focus is on the tools and pipelines themselves: their design, validation, benchmarking, and applicability across fungal systems. Submissions should demonstrate a methodological contribution as their primary focus, not use methodology as a means to a biological result. Studies that mainly report new biological insight using established genomic or transcriptomic approaches are better suited to companion Research Topics in this section, such as “Genomic and Transcriptomic Advances in Fungal Research.”We welcome high-quality original research, methods, and review articles on, but not limited to, the following themes: * Single-cell genomics and transcriptomics methods for fungal systems * Metagenomic approaches for complex environmental or clinical fungal substrates * Machine learning methods for de novo gene prediction in fungal genomes * Computational pipelines and tools for fungal genome annotation * Benchmarking or validation studies comparing genomic and transcriptomic methodologies in mycology * Emerging technical challenges and solutions in mycological genomics This Topic welcomes contributions from computational biologists, bioinformaticians, and genomics specialists developing or benchmarking next-generation methodologies for fungal research.
