New Approach Methodologies in Nanotoxicology
The rapid growth of nanotechnology has introduced novel engineered nanomaterials into medicine, consumer products, and energy. Assessing the safety of these complex materials is vital. Traditional toxicology testing relies heavily on animal studies; however, these methods are slow, costly, and raise ethical concerns. Furthermore, animal models do not always predict human responses to nanoparticles. To address these limits, the scientific community is moving toward New Approach Methodologies, also known as NAMs. These modern tools include high-throughput cell-based assays, computational models, and acellular chemical tests. This Research Topic gathers new research on the development and application of NAMs in nanotoxicology. We want to show how researchers can use these tools to predict, detect, and mitigate nanomaterial hazards. We welcome submissions that focus on the following themes:- Advanced cell-based models: including organ-on-a-chip platforms, spheroids, and organoids.- Computational toxicology: including machine-learning models, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) tools, and pharmacokinetic models.- Mechanistic chemical assays: including rapid tests to measure reactive oxygen species or membrane damage.- Regulatory translation: including validation, standardization, and data-sharing strategies to help regulators accept NAMs.- Safety-by-design frameworks: including screening tools that guide safer synthesis of novel nanomaterials. We accept several article types, such as Original Research, Systematic Reviews, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, and Perspective articles.
