New Approach Methodologies in Viral Disease Investigation

The study of viral diseases remains a cornerstone of global health research, particularly as emerging and re-emerging viruses continue to challenge diagnostic systems and surveillance infrastructures. Traditional virological methods, while foundational, often prove insufficient for real-time detection, rapid response, and predictive modelling in outbreak situations. Recent advances in digital epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, and data analytics have opened new frontiers in viral disease investigation, enabling a shift from laboratory-centric processes to be integrated, technology-driven monitoring systems. However, despite the availability of advanced methodologies, there remains a gap in harmonizing novel digital tools and multiplex diagnostic platforms for real-world clinical applicability, especially in decentralized or resource-limited settings. This Research Topic aims to explore and consolidate cutting-edge methodologies that enhance our ability to trace, identify, and profile viral pathogens with improved speed and precision. It seeks contributions that evaluate innovative technologies such as digital contact tracing platforms, AI-based syndromic surveillance systems, and multiplex diagnostic assays capable of differentiating multiple viral agents at the point of care. By integrating diverse approaches—from computational modelling to clinical validation—this Research Topic aspires to improve early detection and strengthen preparedness for future viral threats. Key questions include how these systems can be streamlined for routine public health practice, and how data integrity, interoperability, and ethical standards can be maintained within such expanded frameworks. To gather further insights into the practical implementation and translational potential of new approach methodologies, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Development and validation of syndromic surveillance algorithms for early outbreak detectionIntegration of digital contact tracing systems in clinical and community settingsAdvances in multiplex point-of-care diagnostics for viral diseasesApplication of machine learning in viral epidemiology and disease characterizationData governance, privacy, and interoperability in digital viral surveillanceCase studies on implementation of NAMs (New Approach Methodologies) in public health systemsCross-disciplinary strategies combining digital tools, omics, and traditional laboratory methodsAccepted article types: Original Research, Methods, Technology Report, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, and Brief Research Report.
