New Approaches to Diagnosis and Intervention for Age-Related Diseases in Animals

Various age-related diseases have increased as animals live longer. Chronic inflammation is a common underlying pathology shared by age-related diseases, including obesity disease, chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. In aged animals, chronic inflammation tends to occur more readily, and age-related inflammation (inflammaging) appears to contribute the onset and progression of age-related disease. As age-related diseases are difficult to treat radically, early diagnosis and prevention of severe diseases are more important than curing the disease. The secretion of proinflammatory cytokines from senescent cells accumulated in tissues with age, the so-called ‘senescence-associated secretory phenotype’ (SASP), contributes to the onset of inflammaging. Serum amyloid A (SAA) as one of the SASP molecules appears to be a useful diagnostic marker for inflammaging in cats. Several studies have reported that phytochemicals exhibit strong anti-inflammatory effects and polyphenols such as resveratrol and quercetin are used as nutraceuticals to suppress chronic inflammation. Moreover, regenerative medicine is expected to help prevent severe age-related diseases. In an aging society, “early diagnosis and extension of healthy life expectancy” are required for veterinary medicine. Early diagnosis of inflammaging appears to lead the prevention of age-related diseases. Development of new nutraceuticals to suppress inflammaging may prevent onset of various age-related diseases in animals. Regenerative medicine using stem cell therapy is expected to have application in age-related disease. This research topic covers the following subjects:-Monitoring of personal health record based on periodic health checkup-Development of new diagnostic biomarkers for inflammaging-New approaches to intervention (nutraceuticals, regenerative medicine and others) for age-related diseasesAll types of articles will be considered for publication, including short reports, primary research articles and reviews.
