New Perspectives in the Diagnosis and Management of Female Urological Diseases

The field of Female Urology has witnessed increasing scientific attention due to the substantial impact urological disorders have on women’s health, quality of life, and the wider healthcare system. Conditions such as stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and pelvic organ prolapse are not only prevalent but can lead to chronic discomfort, impaired mental well-being, and significant healthcare resource utilization. Despite notable progress, persistent challenges remain regarding the standardization of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, the elucidation of disease mechanisms, and the development of consensus guidelines. Recent research has provided valuable insights into pathophysiology, explored new biomarkers, and tested innovative surgical approaches, yet heterogeneity in clinical practice and limited understanding of complex syndromes continue to impede optimal patient care. This Research Topic aims to consolidate current advances and emerging trends in Female Urology, offering a dedicated platform for the dissemination and critical appraisal of new knowledge. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across clinical and foundational research, it seeks to clarify disease mechanisms, improve diagnostic accuracy, and evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and feasibility of novel therapeutic interventions. Central aims include addressing knowledge gaps in disease etiology, testing new hypotheses regarding pathogenesis, and refining practical approaches to both common and complex urological disorders affecting women. The scope of this Research Topic is confined to female-specific urological conditions, emphasizing both scientific discovery and clinical innovation. Contributions are encouraged from experimental research, clinical trials, and reviews that directly relate to female patients or translate discoveries into practice. To gather further insights in this expanding field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Innovations and advancements in surgical approaches for female urological conditions- New developments in the understanding and management of overactive bladder- Pathogenesis and treatment strategies for interstitial cystitis- Clinical and mechanistic research on pelvic organ prolapse- Urogenital fistula and recurrent urinary tract infections- Female neurogenic bladder and postoperative voiding dysfunction after cervical cancer surgery- Physical therapy and rehabilitation for pelvic floor dysfunction- Female pelvic pain syndrome and its management- Advances in urodynamic studies- Etiology, diagnosis, and intervention for urinary incontinence- Basic science investigations into female urological disease mechanismsTopic Editor Cyrille Guillot-Tantay received consulting fees from IBSA.
