New Trends in Genetics and the Role of AI in Clinical Applications: From Prenatal Genomics to Precision Medicine
Advances in genetic technologies have significantly transformed biomedical research and clinical practice. High-throughput sequencing, non-invasive prenatal testing, and large-scale genomic data generation have expanded our ability to identify genetic variants associated with health and disease. At the same time, the increasing complexity and volume of genomic data present substantial analytical challenges, and no single methodological framework is sufficient to capture all relevant patterns. Advanced computational approaches, including machine learning, can provide useful complementary tools depending on the specific context. The integration of genomic, clinical, and phenotypic data through both conventional and AI-driven methods holds promise for improving diagnostic accuracy, enhancing risk prediction, and supporting the development of individualized therapeutic strategies. The goal of this Research Topic is to explore emerging trends in genetics while highlighting the complementary roles of both AI-based and traditional analytical approaches in advancing genomic research and clinical applications. This Topic seeks to showcase innovative research in areas such as prenatal genomics, genetic diagnostics, variant interpretation, and precision medicine, including studies that develop, compare, or integrate diverse methodological frameworks. Contributions are especially encouraged that examine how computational and statistical methods, ranging from classical models to AI tools, can support early disease detection, improve clinical decision-making, and enable personalized prevention and treatment strategies. In addition, the Research Topic aims to foster collaboration between geneticists, clinicians, data scientists, and bioinformaticians working across methodological boundaries. By bringing together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews, this collection intends to highlight current challenges, methodological complementarities, and future perspectives in the application of both artificial intelligence and established approaches to genetic and genomic medicine. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, and systematic reviews focusing on recent advances in genetics and the application of artificial intelligence in genomic research and clinical practice. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Prenatal and reproductive genomics• Advanced ML and AI based solutions for Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing • AI-based genomic data analysis• Machine learning in variant interpretation• Rare disease diagnostics, pharmacogenomics and precision medicine• Bioinformatics approaches in genomics, and integrative analysis of genomic and clinical data• Studies addressing ethical, legal and social implications of AI and genomic technologies are also encouraged Topic editors: Ivo Dumic-Cule, Tomislav Mestrovic Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79365/new-trends-in-genetics-and-the-role-of-ai-in-clinical-applications-from-prenatal-genomics-to-precision-medicine
