Next-generation Diagnostic Models and Mechanistic Biomarkers in Cancer Cell Biology

Cancer cell biology has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of contemporary cancer research, driving the integration of molecular, structural, and translational insights to improve patient outcomes. While technical advances, including high-throughput multi-omics, single-cell technologies, quantitative imaging, and artificial intelligence—have revealed layers of tumor heterogeneity and molecular complexity, translating these findings into robust diagnostic models and actionable biomarkers remains a substantial challenge. Many cancers still lack precise and validated molecular tools for early detection, patient stratification, and therapeutic prediction, partly because single-layer analyses or descriptive studies fail to deliver sufficient mechanistic understanding. The latest research highlights the necessity of system-level approaches, mechanistically anchored discoveries, and functional validation, especially those that bridge fundamental cancer biology and clinical applications. This Research Topic aims to foster breakthroughs in the identification and mechanistic deconstruction of diagnostic models and therapeutic biomarkers for precision oncology, with a particular focus on innovations that move beyond descriptive observations. Our objectives are to integrate multifaceted approaches, including cell and molecular biology, in vivo modeling, and bioinformatic analysis—toward identifying biomarkers that not only correlate with cancer phenotypes but also illuminate the underlying biological pathways driving disease progression and therapy response. By emphasizing actionable mechanisms and translational significance, we seek to catalyze research that forms the basis for new early detection strategies, patient stratification frameworks, and tailored therapeutic interventions across diverse cancer types. This Research Topic specifically encompasses studies that leverage experimental and computational strategies combining mechanistic insight with translational focus in the context of cancer cell biology. Purely descriptive studies and analyses relying solely on public datasets without experimental or functional validation will not be considered. To encourage comprehensive exploration, we invite submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Mechanistic biomarker discovery and validation for cancer diagnostics and targeted therapy.o Integration of multi-omics and AI-driven approaches to unravel cancer cell heterogeneity.o Functional studies of cancer cell signaling, metabolism, and tumor-microenvironment interactions.o Innovation in molecular imaging and technology platforms for early detection.o Translational and clinical validation of candidate biomarkers and therapeutic targets.o System-level dissection of tumor evolution, immunology, and microbe-cancer interactions.o Strategies linking structural biology to molecular mechanisms and epidemiological risk in cancer.
