Next-Generation Energy Conversion and Storage Management for Sustainable Energy Systems

This topic focuses on research into energy conversion technologies and new ways to manage energy storage systems. These systems are important for transitioning to sustainable energy systems that emit few greenhouse gases. Energy conversion technologies and energy storage systems are crucial for this transition. The topic covers studies that look at how to convert energy from one form to another, like from electrical to thermal or from chemical to mechanical, in an efficient way. It also looks at ideas for storing energy, combining different energy sources, and using energy when it is needed at different times and in different places, including energy storage systems. The scope includes emerging storage technologies (electrochemical, thermal, hydrogen, and hybrid systems), advanced production and optimization methods, digital and data-driven management approaches, and system-level integration with renewable and distributed energy resources. Contributions that bridge component-level innovation with system-wide performance, reliability, flexibility, and scalability are particularly encouraged.Traditional energy storage solutions frequently struggle to strike the right balance between energy density and power density, as well as lifecycle performance, cost, and environmental impact. To address these difficulties, we need next-generation energy conversion and storage management systems that are intelligent, adaptive, and system-oriented. Recent improvements in power electronics, solid-state batteries, hydrogen energy systems, and hybrid storage architectures, on the other hand, show promise for increasing efficiency and flexibility. The integration of artificial intelligence and advanced control algorithms allows for real-time optimization of distributed energy resources and demand response. Additionally, sector coupling—which connects energy, heating, transportation, and industry—can improve overall system resilience. Sustainable energy systems can meet improved reliability, efficiency, and carbon reduction goals by combining novel materials, smart energy management systems, and coordinated multi-energy networks. This Research Topic aims to explore innovative technologies, system architectures, and intelligent management strategies that enhance the performance, flexibility, and sustainability of modern energy systems. The focus is on integrated solutions that bridge advanced energy conversion technologies and emerging storage systems. This Research Topic also aligns with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Advances in renewable energy integration and high‑performance energy storage directly support SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by improving access to reliable and sustainable energy technologies. Research on intelligent energy infrastructure and advanced energy systems contributes to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the development of resilient and efficient technological solutions. In addition, improved coordination of renewable generation, storage technologies, and multi‑energy systems supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) by enabling deeper decarbonization and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:1. Advanced energy conversion technologies (e.g., high-efficiency power electronics, fuel cells, hydrogen systems, waste-to-energy solutions)2. Next-generation energy storage systems (solid-state batteries, flow batteries, supercapacitors, hybrid storage, thermal, and hydrogen storage)3. Intelligent energy management systems using AI, machine learning, and digital twins4. Integrated multi-energy systems and sector coupling5. Optimization, control, and real-time monitoring strategies6. techno-economic analysis, lifecycle assessment, and sustainability evaluationWe are interested in original research articles, review papers, mini-reviews, case studies, methodological papers, and perspective or outlook articles that present novel concepts and experimental validation.
