Next-Generation Genomic Profiling in Thoracic Oncology: Implications for Personalized Medicine

The field of thoracic oncology has undergone a significant transformation with the integration of next-generation genomic profiling technologies. Traditional treatment approaches for lung and other thoracic cancers have largely relied on broad clinical and histological classifications, which often fail to account for the underlying molecular diversity seen among patients. Contemporary research has revealed a complex landscape of genomic alterations that drive cancer pathogenesis, prognosis, and treatment response, highlighting the critical need for more individualized therapeutic strategies. Despite substantial advances, there remain gaps in the clinical translation of these findings, including variability in access to genomic testing, interpretive challenges, and the need for robust data connecting mutations to treatment outcomes.Recent studies have demonstrated that next-generation sequencing (NGS) can identify actionable mutations and biomarkers that are often missed by conventional methods. This has enabled oncologists to select targeted therapies, improve patient stratification in clinical trials, and anticipate resistance mechanisms with greater precision. However, the integration of genomic data into routine care faces ongoing debates regarding cost-effectiveness, ethical concerns surrounding incidental findings, and the necessity for interdisciplinary expertise in genomic interpretation. Moreover, while promising results have emerged for select patient subgroups, there is a substantial need to expand these approaches to broader, more diverse populations. This Research Topic aims to explore how next-generation genomic profiling can revolutionize the management and outcomes of thoracic cancer patients by implementing personalized medicine strategies. The objective is to critically assess the clinical benefits, limitations, and future potential of these advanced molecular tools, addressing key research questions about their real-world application, impact on treatment decision-making, and broader implications for healthcare systems. By fostering a comprehensive understanding of the field, the collection seeks to bridge existing gaps between scientific innovation and clinical practice. To gather further insights into the impact and practical adoption of next-generation genomic profiling in thoracic oncology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Identification and validation of novel genomic biomarkers in thoracic cancers- Integration of genomic data into therapeutic decision-making- Emerging clinical trial designs utilizing molecular profiling- Challenges in the accessibility and standardization of NGS in clinical settings- Ethical, legal, and social implications of widespread genomic testing- Real-world outcomes and health economics of personalized medicine interventions- Novel bioinformatic and analytic frameworks for interpreting complex NGS datasets Topic editors: Mohamed Rahouma, MD, PhD, MSc, MS, Savvas Lampridis, Renwang Liu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77385/next-generation-genomic-profiling-in-thoracic-oncology-implications-for-personalized-medicine
