Next-Generation MXene Technologies in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
MXene materials have rapidly emerged in the field of two-dimensional materials due to their unique combination of transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, which afford them excellent electrical conductivity, robust mechanical strength, and notable biocompatibility. These distinguishing qualities have made MXene a compelling candidate in biomedical research, where the demand for multifunctional advanced materials continues to rise. Despite strides in applications such as tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and biosensor technologies, significant knowledge gaps remain, particularly regarding comprehensive safety profiles, optimized functionalization, and long-term clinical impacts. Recent studies have begun to uncover new uses and mechanisms of MXene materials in biological contexts, revealing a vast, yet largely untapped, potential to transform modern medicine. This Research Topic aims to drive innovation in biomedical science by exploring and expanding the application of MXene-based materials. The central objective is to systematically examine MXene’s utility across a spectrum of biomedical domains, from foundational studies on its biocompatibility to advanced investigations of its performance in therapeutic and diagnostic settings. By addressing both established and speculative applications, this research seeks to clarify MXene’s mechanisms of action, optimize its integration into medical devices and treatments, and rigorously evaluate safety and efficacy for clinical use.The scope of this Research Topic is limited to studies focusing on MXene materials within biomedical applications, emphasizing both experimental and translational research while excluding unrelated developments in other industrial or technological sectors. To gather further insights in MXene’s application in the biomedical field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Applications of MXene in tissue engineering• MXene in drug delivery systems• MXene in biosensors• Antimicrobial properties and mechanisms of MXene• MXene in cancer treatmentWe welcome original research articles, review articles, and short reports.
