Next-Generation Nanomaterials for Precision Biomedical Detection

Next-generation nanomaterials present advanced capabilities, enabling them for precise biomedical detection and allowing ultra-sensitive, selective, and instant analysis of clinically important biomarkers. Materials like plasmonic nanoparticles, magnetic nanostructures, quantum dots, upconversion nanoparticles, MOFs, 2D materials (graphene, MXenes), and nanozymes offer tunable optical, electrical, and catalytic properties for signal strengthening. Their large surface area facilitates many probes to be attached, whereas engineered surfaces reduce nonspecific binding. Diagnostic approaches combine molecular recognition, innovative transduction (magnetic, plasmonic, fluorescent, electrochemical), and antifouling coatings for matrix tolerance. These technologies are used to diagnose communicable disease, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases via biomarker detection; and used for liquid biopsy, and clinical drug monitoring. Incorporation with microfluidics, wearables, and AI-driven analytics improves portability, automation, and quantitative precision. While issues related to reproducibility, scalability, and regulatory compliance exist, advances in nanomaterial synthesis, surface chemistry, and integrated signal platforms are steadily empowering sophisticated biosensors for multiplexed, real-time, and minimally invasive clinical and point-of-care diagnostics. The major challenge in medical diagnostics is achieving rapid, ultra-sensitive, and precise detection of biomarkers in complex samples without extensive sample preparation. Current detection systems often suffer from limited sensitivity, matrix interference, and lack of real-time or multiplex capabilities, hindering early diagnosis and personalized healthcare. By emphasizing next-generation nanomaterials with enhanced optical, electrical, and catalytic properties, combined with robust surface engineering and antifouling approaches, we seek innovative solutions to address these challenges. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts presenting innovative nanomaterial designs, sensing mechanisms, incorporation with microfluidics or AI analytics, and translational strategies for scalable, point-of-care, and continuous biomedical diagnostics. This Research Topic invites Original Research articles, Reviews, and Perspectives on the design, synthesis, functionalization, and application of engineered nanomaterials for biomedical detection.
