Next-Generation Technologies in Assessing Gastrointestinal Health and Disease

In the realm of healthcare, the functional assessment of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract has become increasingly crucial, rivalling traditional structural evaluations like those aimed at detecting cancer. The established methods, including MRI and barium enema, utilize sophisticated imaging technologies that, despite providing comprehensive insights, often face challenges related to accessibility, patient convenience, and resource allocation. Recently, enhancements in measurement accuracy, data analysis techniques, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked significant progress in this area. This Research Topic aims to propel the development of efficient, patient-friendly technologies that enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient care in gastrointestinal function evaluation. By focusing on advanced methodologies and innovative applications, the goal is to address the current limitations of traditional assessment tools and to foster the integration of these new technologies into routine clinical practice. To further knowledge within this confined area, we welcome contributions that explore a range of themes:• Techniques for GI Motility Evaluation: Focus on signal, data, and image processing methods.• Novel Approaches to GI Function Assessment: Emerging techniques for assessing GI function in both healthy individuals and patients with GI disorders.• Classification of GI Diseases: Innovative methodologies that distinguish between GI diseases and non-pathological conditions.• Innovative Measurement Tools: Development of new sensors and devices aimed at enhancing the monitoring, evaluation, and testing of GI function.Articles exploring AI applications for fundamental evaluations in healthy populations, which aid in setting baseline data for preventive healthcare, are also encouraged. For a complete list of article types that can be considered, please follow this link (https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/physiology/for-authors/article-types). Even though abstract submission is not mandatory, we encourage all interested researchers to submit an abstract before submitting their manuscript. Abstracts do not have to coincide with the final abstract of the manuscripts.
