Next-Generation Urology: Emerging Evidence and Innovations from the Young Academic Urologists (YAU) Network
Urology is experiencing a rapid evolution driven by technological advances, translational research, and a growing emphasis on multidisciplinary care. Young investigators are increasingly contributing to this transformation by generating innovative data across diverse areas of the field, including andrology, oncological urology, functional urology, reconstructive surgery, and digital health. The Young Academic Urologists (YAU) group of the European Association of Urology (EAU) represents a unique international network of early-career clinician-scientists actively engaged in cutting-edge research and collaborative projects. Through multicenter studies, translational investigations, and clinical innovation, the YAU network has played a pivotal role in advancing several domains of modern urology.Despite these efforts, many of these contributions remain scattered across subspecialties. A dedicated Research Topic would provide a platform to showcase high-quality collaborative research, methodological innovations, and emerging clinical insights generated by the new generation of academic urologists. This Research Topic aims to highlight the breadth of contemporary urological research conducted within the YAU network and beyond, fostering collaboration and dissemination of novel evidence that may shape future clinical practice.Scope and Topics of InterestWe welcome submissions including original research, systematic reviews, narrative reviews, methodological papers, and perspectives related to emerging topics in urology.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:Andrology and Male Reproductive Health· Male infertility and advanced sperm function testing· Hormonal regulation and late-onset hypogonadism· Impact of lifestyle factors (obesity, inflammation, environmental exposures) on male fertility· Digital health and artificial intelligence in andrologyUrological Oncology· Novel biomarkers and liquid biopsy in prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer· Imaging innovations and precision diagnostics· Focal therapy and organ-preserving strategies· Translational research and molecular profilingFunctional and Reconstructive Urology· Innovations in lower urinary tract dysfunction management· Minimally invasive surgical therapies (MIST) for BPH· Advances in reconstructive urology and prosthetic surgery· Recent innovations in neurourologySexual Medicine· Erectile dysfunction management in complex patient populations· Penile rehabilitation after pelvic surgery· Psychological and social determinants of sexual healthSurgical Innovation and Technology· Robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques· Artificial intelligence and machine learning in urology· Digital surgery and training platformsMethodological Advances and Collaborative Research· Multicenter collaborative studies· Big data and registry-based research· Novel statistical approaches and predictive modeling in urologyThe Topic Editors Giorgio Ivan Russo, Begoña Ballesta Martinez, Cyrille Guillot-Tantay and Federico Piramide declare that they are affiliated with the Young Academic Urologists (YAU) group of the European Association of Urology (EAU), a network of early-career urologists collaborating on clinical, educational and research projects in urology.
