Next-Generation Vaccine Platforms and Adjuvants for Emerging Arboviruses and Coronaviruses

The field of vaccine research is rapidly evolving in response to the mounting threat posed by emerging arboviruses and coronaviruses, which continue to challenge global public health systems with new outbreaks and pandemics. Despite significant advances in controlling these pathogens, gaps remain in the breadth, speed, and durability of immunity achieved by conventional vaccines. Recent attention has focused on the development of next-generation vaccine platforms, such as mRNA, subunit, and insect-based technologies, as well as novel adjuvants that can enhance immunogenicity and broaden protection. The urgent need for more effective and adaptable vaccine solutions is underscored by the limitations of existing approaches, variability in immune responses, and the ever-expanding diversity of viral threats.Current research in the field has generated promising results with mRNA and subunit vaccines, demonstrating rapid development timelines, scalability, and refined antigen targeting. Innovations in insect-based expression systems are also yielding advances in vaccine safety, production and delivery, offering cost-effective and flexible alternatives. Moreover, novel adjuvant technologies are being explored to overcome issues of waning immunity and to induce broader, cross-protection immunity. However, critical questions persist regarding the safety, durability, and real-world performance of these novel interventions, especially for newly emerging or highly diverse pathogens. This Research Topic aims to catalyze new research and interdisciplinary dialogue around the development, evaluation, and application of next-generation vaccine platforms and adjuvants targeting emerging arboviruses and coronaviruses. Contributions are sought that advance understanding of immunogenicity, address safety and efficacy, and explore innovative design, production, and delivery strategies. Special emphasis is placed on comparative studies, preclinical and clinical evaluation, and translational efforts that bridge fundamental research with real-world impact. To gather further insights into innovative vaccine strategies for arboviruses and coronaviruses, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Next-generation mRNA, subunit, and insect-based vaccine technologies- Design, development, and immunogenicity of novel vaccines- Discovery and evaluation of new adjuvants- Animal models for preclinical assessment- Vaccine safety, durability, and efficacy- Strategies for universal and cross-protective vaccines- Translational research and challenges in clinical implementation- Regulatory and ethical considerations in vaccine deploymentTopic Editor Dr. Srinivasa Reddy Bonam received financial support from Bharat Biotech International Limited.
