Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Crops: From Assimilation and Remobilization to Yield and Product Quality
Nitrogen is one of the most limiting nutrients for agricultural productivity worldwide, yet inefficient nitrogen management remains a major driver of environmental degradation, including greenhouse gas emissions, nitrate leaching, and loss of soil health. Closing the gap between crop nitrogen demand and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) requires progress across the full production chain: how crops assimilate and remobilize nitrogen, how management practices affect nutrient availability in the soil, and how both together determine yield and product quality.Integrated and regenerative agricultural systems, including conservation tillage, cover cropping, crop rotation, integrated crop-livestock systems, and biological nitrogen fixation, offer a path toward reconciling productivity with environmental sustainability. Realizing that potential depends on understanding how nitrogen assimilation and remobilization in crops interact with soil management practices under real production conditions. This Research Topic welcomes contributions that advance knowledge of nitrogen management across this production chain, including but not limited to:-Mechanisms of nitrogen assimilation and remobilization in crops, and their link to yield and product quality-Genetic and phenotypic variation for NUE and strategies for trait-based selection or breeding-Soil organic matter, carbon-nitrogen dynamics, and microbial community responses under conservation and regenerative management-Tillage systems, crop rotation, and cover cropping effects on nitrogen cycling and soil quality-Biological nitrogen fixation and its integration into cropping systems-Precision nutrient management and other technologies for optimizing nitrogen application-Integrated crop-livestock systems and their role in nutrient cycling and soil conservationInterdisciplinary contributions from agronomy, soil science, and crop production research are highly encouraged. We welcome original research, reviews, and perspective articles that advance resilient, low-carbon agricultural systems through improved nitrogen management, soil health, and crop productivity.
