Non-Invasive, Bio-Sustainable, and Bio-Available Therapies for Metabolic Dysfunction Associated with Diabetes mellitus
Metabolic dysfunctions are a group of diseases that disrupt the body’s anabolic and catabolic processes. They are exacerbated by modifiable and non-modifiable, multifactorial risk factors and mechanisms, including hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation. These processes often begin within cellular machinery and can progress into secondary complications that affect organs or systems.Among these metabolic dysfunctions, Diabetes mellitus (DM), a dysfunction with complex comorbidity that shares molecular and metabolic pathways, is one of the leading causes of global mortality. The application of omics tools, in addition to the emerging advances in artificial intelligence and computational biomedicine have created opportunities to identify novel targets for early diagnosis, pharmacology, and efficient dose delivery, with the potential to outperform conventional practices and improve treatment outcomes for DM.Despite the current drug options available for managing DM and its comorbidity, the focus of emerging treatments lies on non-invasive approaches that are bio-sustainable and bio-available, such as natural bioactive compounds formulations used as supplements, capsules, ointments, or as part of the daily diet for long-term preventive benefits. This Research Topic aims to explore how emerging natural bioactive compounds are used experimentally and computationally to regulate targets in their shared molecular mechanisms—including hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation—that drive DM and its complications, and to highlight relevant protein markers (VEGF, HIF, IL-6, etc.) suitability for diagnosis and prevention therapy. Topics of special interest include, but are not limited to:• Artificial intelligence for modeling novel biomarkers of the diseases below• Artificial intelligence in diagnosis of novel biomarkers of the diseases below• Artificial intelligence-based bioprospecting of herbal bioactive compounds for protein markers of the diseases below • Experimental validation of natural bioactive compounds against protein markers of the diseases below• Novel biomarkers in underlying common signaling pathways of the diseases belowDiseases of interest:• Diabetes mellitus and its complications• Diabetic retinopathy• Diabetic glaucoma• Diabetic nephropathy• Diabetic neuropathy• Diabetic encephalopathy• Diabetic ketoacidosis• HypertensionWe welcome the following manuscript types: Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, Perspectives, and Brief Research Reports.
