Novel Materials for Hazardous Waste Disposal

The field of Hazardous Waste Disposal is critically important and presents a host of environmental challenges. Currently, large volumes of Hazardous Wastes are produced globally, such as industrial solids, radioactive materials, and heavy metal-contaminated effluents, along with Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These wastes pose severe risks to human health and the broader environment, contaminating water, soil, and air, and disrupting aquatic ecosystems and the food chain. The urgency to develop effective disposal methods for these dangerous substances is greater than ever.This Research Topic aims to push the boundaries of current Hazardous Waste management by focusing on the development and utilization of novel materials. Particularly, we seek groundbreaking research in the stabilization of solid waste using glass, ceramic, and glass-ceramic matrices to facilitate metal recovery for the ceramic industry. For wastewater processing and VOC pollutants, the focus is on innovative organic/inorganic materials and their interaction mechanisms that improve current treatment capacities. Radioactive Waste Disposal is geared towards the development of new waste forms for immobilizing high-level waste and designing effective sorbents for volatile radionuclides.To gather further insights on robust methods for hazardous waste management, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Innovative matrices for hazardous solid waste management• New organic/inorganic materials for wastewater processing• New organic/inorganic materials for VOCs treatment• Novel materials for Radioactive Waste DisposalThis Research Topic promotes advanced research that not only addresses the pressing environmental issues posed by Hazardous Wastes but also contributes to the development of sustainable technologies and innovative practices for future generations.
